Hasan Kamaal’s disappointment over AIMPLB’s release of a model Nikahnamah (TOI, Mumbai, May 5, 2005), is more the making of their own cloistered world of misguided and misconceived notions of how India’s social mores can be forced to abide by the wishes and dictat of even well-meaning groups, if they have not earned the trust, confidence and approval of the community members that is supposedly target of their psuedo-reform proposals that hide their wider political agenda. After all India is not a Stalinist wasteland.
In a way, model Nikahnamah in it present form being a tentative first step in reaching out to grass-root Muslims, it is a slap on the face of the ‘progressives’ who had been the sole cause of the delays in AIMPLB’s own proposal of Nikahnamah, as via-media to bring in voluntary social reforms in the community. It was on November 14, 1993, when on an initiative by Mumbai-based social organization IDRAAK, a ‘dialog with AIMPLB’ was held at IDRAAK offices in Mumbai. The then vice-president, who later became the president of AIMPLB, late Qazi Mujahidul Islam had proposed model Nikahnamah, as a beginning mode to reach out to the Muslim society and strive through grass-root counseling and social pressure, to weed out serious injustices inflicted on Muslim women. The Progressive group, well versed only in their well-horned undemocratic forceful tactics, not unlike the Bush all-out project to ‘reform’ Islam, lost the goodwill and trust of the AIMPLB and became the single-most stumbling block towards achieving Qazi Mujahidul Islam’s visionary goals of reforms favoring Muslim women. The Progressives were more interested in their divide-and- rule tactics, to overnight claim the leadership of the Muslim community and to deliver the ‘horde of sheep’ to their party bosses. It took no time for the community to realize that the so-called Muslim progressives were no friend of either Muslim women, Muslims at large or for that matter had any brief for Islam as a religion. To compound the pressure tactic, they further raised the ante by calling for uniform civil code and even got a model Uniform Civil Code publicly launched. In this sacred task, they were dutifully joined by the Sangh Parivar with their own ultimatums of Uniform Civil Code legislation. For the first time, Marxist and Hindutvadis jointly came out on a common anti-Muslim platform, without any pretense of taking Indian Muslims into confidence over such a sweeping measure.
Even after such doubtful credentials, it is surprising, that Hasan Kamaal, after a long stint at communist leaning Urdu Blitz, is feeling disappointed at the model Nikahnamah, which according to him is no model for his brand of ‘Muslim’ progressives. It would be more like even after so many rebuffs; they are completely uninformed of the community called Indian Muslims. Hasan Kamal comes out with another threat when he feels there may be more and more Personal Law Boards as the oldest of them AIMPLB has apparently not met the approval of the progressives. The verdict in any case will remain with the masses. The progressives are welcome to their own corner in the Indian ‘Hyde Park’.
